About The Trainer
Hello! I'm Jolene Curnock and I've been a yoga teacher for 12 years. I am an ERYT 200 hour and CYT 300-hour yoga teacher and trainer. I am trained in Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga through Yoga Jane Training and Yoga Renew. I am currently being mentored by Mary Bartel of InterQuest yoga and The Structural Yoga Therapy.
During my 200 Hour training, I was introduced to and inspired by Mukunda Stiles book, Structural Yoga Therapy and his principle of "Adapting yoga to the individual". This principle helps to create awareness of your individual body and the range of motion of each joint through a sequence of small movements to create balance and stabilization between opposing muscles. I have taken aspects and principles of Hatha, Vinyasa and Structural Yoga Therapy and adapted a purposeful, intuitive, compassionate, and mindful awareness style of yoga that every person attending my classes can apply individually.
I did not have much experience or knowledge of yoga when I became a teacher. I walked into a gym, I took part in one yoga class, and I walked out of that ONE class, KNOWING that teaching yoga is what I was MEANT to do. I was a stay-at-home mom of 5 at the time and did not have a lot of money. I had a side gig, but it was not enough. So, I went out and found a part-time job cleaning houses. Durning this time I became a single mom. Which made this transition a little more challenging. I was determined!! I finished my yoga certification and found myself applying at the gym for a yoga teaching position. Teaching yoga has brought me purpose, fulfillment, clarity, and peace. Teaching yoga is also where I met a woman I didn't know existed (myself), but always desired to be. I am excited to share that and hope it helps others find the same.
I have taught yoga in private studios, corporate offices, for Orange County Fire Rescue, to troubled teens, adults in recovery and for many diverse types of people. Much of my experience has come from teaching in a local gym for the last 12 years. Though, it is different from teaching in a studio, I have learned many things teaching in this type of environment. It is like life; it is full of surprises and the unknown. I am not able to control every aspect, person or event that takes place. There are no rules and unfortunately, no courtesy for others. I must continue to use awareness, compassion and love while teaching there. I have met many people, going through many transitions in their personal life. I learned how to adapt how I teach yoga to all of them. What I have enjoyed the most is having met and preserved so many new relationships along the way. I feel grateful for meeting so many beautiful people and I am honored to be on their path in their journey of life.
Working at the gym has brought me many opportunities. I was able to get trained in other fitness formats. Not only do I teach yoga, but I can also teach Cycle, Bodyworks, Aqua Fit, Mat Pilates and Bootcamp. This changed the way I saw the people in my classes and how I taught them yoga. It also changed how I needed to help my body recover. I began to practice mobility exercises on my own body and if it helped me recover, I would add it to my yoga sequences. I am confident that I teach yoga that is purposeful in movement, compassionate to self, mindfully aware through teaching a mind body connection by slowing down and using the breath and healing to the mind, body and spirit through patience and love for oneself.
